Abstract
To optimize the environmental benefits of trees, an appropriate list of potential tree species needs to be identified based on the desired environmental effects. To help determine the most appropriate tree species for various urban forest functions, a database of 1,585 tree species (see Appendix A) was developed by the USDA Forest Service in cooperation with Horticopia, Inc (2007). Information from this database can be used to select tree species that provide desired functional benefits. This information, in conjunction with local knowledge on species and site characteristics, can be used to select tree species that increase urban forest benefits, but also provide for long-tree life with minimal maintenance.
