Friction over reef top ?Comment:Reef friction is associated with the degree of topography over the reef flat. Three options for calculating friction were provided in the paper. 1st: The percent cover of benthic habitat within each cell, in particular live coral or uneroded dead coral, can be used to define fw from 0.08 to 0.20. 2nd: Coral reef habitat can be categorized into four broad classes to assign values to parameters and estimate wave energy attenuation by reef type (fw 0.14 to 0.18). 3rd: Estimates of reef rugosity or variability in coral heights along the reef can be used to more directly estimate fw. |

Significant wave height ?Comment:Obtained from NOAA Wavewatch III model predictions. |
Slope angle (reef face) ?Comment:The angle of the slope between adjacent grid cells can be used to determine the reef profile factor (Kp), which in turn is used in the computation of the Wave set-up on reef (nr). |
Water depth over reef flat |
Wave height offshore ?Comment:Daily estimates of offshore significant wave height and period were obtained from NOAA Wavewatch III model predictions, and used to estimate the wave height (Ho). |
Wave period ?Comment:Daily estimates of offshore significant wave height and period were obtained from NOAA Wavewatch III model predictions, and used to estimate the wave period (T). This variable is used to compute the intermediate variable - Wave set-up on reef (nr). |
