Abstract
|
The EnviroAtlas interactive map displays national and select community-level spatial data layers of "Ecosystem Services" grouped by category. These data layers are geographic depictions of environmental metrics calculated or modeled by EPA and its partners, and specifically created for EnviroAtlas. BNF Data Fact Sheet: "This EnviroAtlas national map displays the rate of biological nitrogen (N) fixation (BNF) in natural/semi-natural ecosystems within each watershed (12-digit HUC) in the conterminous United States (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) for the year 2006. These data are based on the modeled relationship of BNF with actual evapotranspiration (AET) in natural/semi-natural ecosystems. The mean rate of BNF is for the 12-digit HUC, not to natural/semi-natural lands within the HUC." Acres of pollinated crops with no nearby pollinator habitat Data Fact Sheet: This EnviroAtlas national map estimates the total acres of agricultural crops within each 12-digit hydrologic unit (HUC) that have varying amounts of nearby forested pollinator habitat. The crop types selected from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cropland Data Layer (CDL) require (or would benefit from) the presence of pollinators, but crops may have no nearby native pollinator habitat. This metric is based on the average flight distance of native bees, both social and solitary, that nest in woodland habitats and forage on native plants and cultivated crops. Percent potentially restorable wetlands Data Fact Sheet: This EnviroAtlas national map depicts the percent potentially restorable wetlands within each subwatershed (12-digit HUC) in the U.S. Potentially restorable wetlands are defined as agricultural areas that naturally accumulate water and contain some proportion of poorly-drained soils. The EnviroAtlas Team produced this dataset by combining three data layers - land cover, digital elevation, and soil drainage information. |
